Not a Fan of Familiarity

Matt 13:53-58

Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” AND THEY TOOK OFFENSE AT HIM.

But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.” And he did not do many miracles there BECAUSE OF THEIR LACK OF FAITH.

Familiarity breeds a type of complacency.

Complacency: a feeling of smug or uncritical satisfaction with oneself or one's achievements

“The true measure of a man is not how he behaves in times of comfort and convenience but how he conducts himself in moments of conflict and controversy.” –MLK

Jesus spoke of 3 areas of our lives we must be willing to release control of if we truly want to experience the amazing adventure He has created us for:

Luke 9:57-62 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”

1. POSSESSIONS
There’s nothing wrong with having stuff but don’t let your stuff have you.

vs 58-60 - He said to another man, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

2. PRIORITIES
Life doesn’t wait on the wounded.

vs 61-62 - 61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.” Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

3. PEOPLE
Jesus said you must be willing to hate your father, mother, sister, brother and yes even your own life.

Lets become comfortable being uncomfortable and live this life impacting others for Gods glory!
